Program in Course Redesign

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Course Title: Economic Statistics
Redesign Coordinator: Lanny Arvan

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign redesigned Economic Statistics II, the second of a two-course sequence, to make the course more hands on, relate course material to real business situations and help students retain learning for later use. The course redesign involved reducing lectures from three to two per week; shifting lecture into a consultation period; using a team- and project-oriented approach; and taking advantage of computer- based calculation and assessment packages to provide rapid feedback to students. Based on the redesign of this course, the University then redesigned the first course in this sequence to increase the savings. Redesign of Economic Statistics II alone was projected to result in a reduction of the cost-per-student from about $237 to $159, an annual cost reduction of approximately $124,800. When the redesign was extended to Economic Statistics I, the anticipated annual cost reduction was approximately $249,600. The results of the completed redesign can be found by following the links listed below under Final Report.
