State and System Course Redesign
Minnesota State Colleges and Universities
2005– 2006

In partnership with the National Center for Academic Transformation, the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) established a course redesign program among its 42 institutions that built on the successful models and lessons learned from the Program in Course Redesign (PCR). MnSCU provided institutional grants ranging between $15,000 and $20,000 to assist with implementation of the redesign plans. While MnSCU has had a long-standing faculty development effort aimed at increasing the use of technology in teaching, this new initiative was more strategic and focused on the need to contain instructional costs while increasing student learning.

MnSCU launched the first statewide competition, entitled “Designed for Learning,” in July 2005 and issued an invitation to participate to all member institutions. Interested teams of faculty and administrators participated in two workshops led by NCAT and then worked with NCAT as needed to develop course redesign proposals. NCAT ranked proposals and advised a review committee of representatives from MnSCU about which projects to fund. Pilots of the course redesigns occurred in fall 2006 with full implementation in spring 2007.
